MILITARY TEE / CREW 8

The MILITARY TEE / CREW 8 draws inspiration from US Navy flight deck jerseys worn from the 1920s onward and has been made from 100% 8oz. cotton, constructed without side seams, using 100% cotton sewing thread. The “CREW 8” stencil in this example displays the simple numbering often used to identify individual personnel in ground crews. Each print is applied by hand in our Kobe headquarters.

This graphic recreates markings seen on the brightly colored US Navy flight deck jerseys from the 1960s and 70s, rooted in a system that began in the early 1920s aboard the USS Langley, the Navy’s first aircraft carrier. Color-coded jerseys were introduced to clearly distinguish duties on deck and maintain safety during flight operations, which is a practice that still continues today.

By the Second World War, these colors developed defined meanings: yellow for aircraft directors, red for ordnance crews, blue for plane handlers, white for safety personnel, green for catapult and arresting gear crews, and brown for plane captains.
