The USS Kidd, a Fletcher-class destroyer of the U.S. Navy, was named in honor of Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who was killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Known as the “Pirate of the Atlantic and Pacific”, the ship gained its unique identity through its connection to 17th-century pirate William Kidd, also known as Captain Kidd. Inspired by the ship’s name, the crew adopted Captain Kidd as their mascot, painting his image on the forward smokestack.
This pirate symbolism was approved by Admiral Kidd’s widow, who not only endorsed the idea but also secured Navy authorisation for the USS Kidd to fly the Jolly Roger. This made it the only U.S. Navy warship permitted to fly the iconic pirate flag.
